October 6, 2005 2005 Nellie Cashman Award Finalist Dr. Barbara Brewitt Brewitt forges ahead with a new kind of medicine M. Sharon Baker To each side, Brewitt is a foreigner. They don’t know how to judge this former National Institutes of Health researcher with nine patents; this scientist who’s adopting the alternative medicine mantra that the body can heal itself, given a little help. The 57-year-old innovator is trying to sell anti-aging products in a world bombarded with ads for nutritional supplements that promise miracles but lack scientific backing. In an attempt to validate alternative medicine, Brewitt is lobbying the federal Food and Drug Administration to regulate the industry — thus far to no avail. Brewitt is founder, chief scientist and chief executive of Biomed Comm Inc., a small Seattle biotechnology company that sells small proteins that tell an aging body to begin making and repairing cells, a process that sparks internal rejuvenation. Sold in pill form and requiring no prescription, her cell signalers are sparking a new classification of medicine. In clinical studies, patients have reported increased memory, focus and energy, stronger heart and immune systems, relief from stress and headaches, weight loss, increased muscle mass and improved sleep, among other factors. Biomed’s cell signalers are being taken by autism and HIV (AIDS virus) patients as well as baby boomers who want to stave off aging. After ditching a career path in computer programming, and getting a master’s in divinity from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver , Brewitt said she was plagued with questions about what disease was, so she decided to earn a doctorate from the University of Washington . Brewitt’s work at the UW involved researching how important growth factors were to the transparency of the eye’s lens. The Tacoma native noticed that cells talk to each other using signaling proteins called growth factors. Rather than flooding the lens with powerful growth hormones, Brewitt took a page from the homeopathic guidebook and tried treating the lens with very small doses. The results were remarkable. “I saw the potential significance to the general population, and thought, ‘Could I innovate a way for people to access cell signaling to improve their health?’” Brewitt said. After proving her theories several times at the NIH’s National Eye Institute, “I realized very few people have this gift I was given, and I was full of gratitude,” she said. “It made my heart break open because I understood that I could transform the growth factor into a safe, effective medicine that wasn’t toxic to people.” Brewitt founded Biomed in 1996 and has struggled to keep the $1-million-sales business going amid difficulties. Earlier this year, a large pharmaceutical company suddenly cut off the supply of materials used to make the proteins. At the same time, a hostile competitor bought out Biomed’s manufacturer, leaving Brewitt “literally scared for a month and a half,” she said. The purchase forced her to go into the manufacturing business, a move that wasn’t in the undercapitalized company’s budget. that have shown the effectiveness of homeopathic human growth factors (HoGFs)
to strengthen the immune system and promote quality of life with HIV. The treatment integrates molecular biology and homeopathy. Growth factors are cell signaling proteins that regulate and coordinate cell-to-cell communication and are crucial agents for cellular survival, development, specialization, nutrient uptake, and repair, enabling a cell to be restored in the event of illness, infection, trauma or stress. HoGFs are highly diluted doses of growth factors. While tests conducted with AIDS patients in the early 1990s showed that pharmacologic doses of growth factors caused many toxic effects, preparing growth factors homeopathically eliminates toxicity while achieving significant clinical benefits. These findings were replicated in three additional studies in cities across the U.S. , including one that showed HoGFs reduced viral loads with no mutations or viral resistance compared to placebo and anti-retroviral therapies (ARTs) even after 2.5 years. The current drug protocols of ARTs and HAARTs (highly active anti-retroviral therapies) focus on killing the virus, but have not stopped viral replication and cause adverse side effects. Plus, these drugs are very expensive and unavailable to HIV-infected status and only available to those with AIDS status in countries like South Africa ,EDr. Brewitt explained. That's why our prior findings and the new South African study are so exciting. It means there are several choices available to people in fighting this epidemic.Elt;/P> The South African study, which began in April this year, focused on HIV-infected children ages one to 12 in Finetown , South Africa , an impoverished settlement that, like the rest of the country, has been hit hard by AIDS. These children have spent their lives sick, undernourished and small for their ages, which is typical of pediatric HIV sufferers. The study's results not only confirmed the prior findings, but also proved HoGFs were particularly effective in children at all stages of disease. While the disease usually stunts growth, these children experienced catch-upEgrowth with significant increases in height, head circumference and lean body mass. In addition, their CD4 T-cells increased by five percent. Our prior data showed that HoGFs raise CD4 counts as much as ARTs, and they do so without negative side effects,Esaid Dr. Brewitt. This study shows this can even occur in children who are living in the most undesirable survival conditions.E Dr. Brewitt believes this treatment offers great hope, not only for South Africa, which has the largest number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the world and 90 percent of children's deaths from the disease, but also patients around the globe.
