There are more than 42 million HIV-infected people in the world; nearly 30 million of those are in Africa (mostly sub-Saharan Africa). 1

Approximately 14,000 new HIV infections occur daily around the world and more than 90% of these are in developing countries.

In 2003 nearly 3 million people died of AIDS around the world; 2.2 million of them were in Sub-Sahara Africa. 2

HIV/AIDS in South Africa:

South Africa has the highest number of people (5.3 million) living with HIV/AIDS in the world, with an average of 1,500 people infected daily. 3

The estimated number of adults and children who died of AIDS in 2003 in South Africa was 520,0004

Nearly 7% of South African children between the ages of two and nine are infected with HIV 1
