Letter to Editor, hGH Spam

Dear Editor:

We agree with doctors and researchers who believe e-mail marketers of synthetic human-growth hormone must be stopped (“Scientists Battle Spammers over HGH Pitches, Sales,” June 12). True human growth hormone is an exciting signaling protein with the potential for several anti-aging effects when manufactured and administered appropriately. It is critical that companies selling hGH products substantiate their claims with double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical studies showing statistically significant results. Many e-mail marketers or producers of oral hGH refer to studies on injectable hGH as if they are relevant to their particular oral products. We call this “borrowed science”.

Consumers looking for hGH products should question advertising claims, carefully read labels, and obtain relevant facts before purchasing hGH. (1) Read labels and look for the terms homeopathic recombinant human growth hormone or somatotropin. Questionable sales pitches include such terms as organotherapy, secretagogues, precursors, pro-hGH, hGH releasers, hGH enhancers, deer antler, colustrum, or amino acids. (2) Request copies of specific clinical studies to substantiate claims made by the company selling hGH and ask if the studies are published in U.S. peer-reviewed medical journals. (3) Ask about the company’s compliance with FDA and FTC regulatory standards or if there have been federal or state compliance violations. (4) Ask to see the product’s patent numbers or check for a national drug code (NDC) on the label.

Recombinant, homeopathic growth hormone (rhGH) is the safest form of the hormone, avoiding most of the side effects of highly concentrated prescription injections. For results on three double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical studies conducted on the positive effects of taking homeopathic rhGH in healthy adults, go to www.biomedcomm.com.
